![]() ![]() This type of ambitious cross-disciplinary research has a huge impact as it opens new research avenues and has the potential to provide transformative insight into the critical environmental impact of modern Arctic climate change. ![]() This project pioneers a conceptually unique approach combining new insights into foraminifera ecology with novel techniques in micro-CT scanning and interpretative frameworks developed in biomedical imaging. ![]() By placing current changes in population dynamics and their impact on communities/ecosystems in the context of natural climate variability of pre-industrial marine landscapes the fellow will be able to compare modern adaptive strategies with past responses and thereby determine the impact of modern climate change on Arctic ecosystems. The fellow will work with the unique archive of fossil foraminifera shells, that preserve microstructural characteristics of their reproductive behavior in marine sediments. Specifically, the fellow will explore the reproductive behaviors of endemic and migrating Arctic and subpolar planktonic foraminifera (marine protists) in response to rapid environmental change in the past, present, and future. In this project, the post-doctoral fellow will investigate how Arctic marine ecosystems respond to the rapid Atlantification of the Arctic due to modern climate change. University of Galway seeks a highly motivated, high-potential applicant for a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher to work within the research project: MERRACC: Marine Ecosystem Response to Rapid Arctic Climate Change. In this context, the aim of this research project is develop and test a Flood Forecasting System (FFS) for an urban area subject to frequent compound floods. AS such, there is a n urgent need to better understand the dynamics of floods and to provide adequate measures and methods to manage flood risks effectively and efficiently today and for the future. Additionally, the consequences of flood events are widespread and impact negatively many SDGs. The current situation with floods around the globe already threatens sustainable developments, while floods in future are expected to also alter exposure to climate risks, which may potentially reinforce inequalities, and the reality is that they continue exposing large number of lives in risk. Projected increases in rainfall, sea level and storm winds are likely to escalate the risk of flooding in the future.
